Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009), a leading American realist painter of the 20th century.
The first retrospective exhibition in Japan since his death is currently being held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum until July 5, 2026 (Sunday). The "Andrew Wyeth Exhibition" will then tour to the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art and the Abeno Harukas Art Museum, and has now collaborated with ROOTOTE, a specialty brand for tote bags.

Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) was a leading American realist painter of the 20th century.
He distanced himself from movements like American Abstract Expressionism, Neo-Dada, and Pop Art, which gained prominence after World War II, and instead dedicated himself to depicting the people and landscapes around him.
His works are not merely reproductions of scenes before his eyes, but rather reflections of the artist's own spiritual world.
Many of his works feature motifs that signify a certain boundary, such as windows and doors.
Boundaries have been a recurring theme in the history of Western painting, but for Wyeth, they functioned as a connection to a more private world, or as a dividing line.
This exhibition aims to explore the world depicted by Wyeth, focusing on his representation of these boundaries.

Andrew Wyeth was born on July 12, 1917, at his home in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, as the fifth child of Newell Convers Wyeth (N.C. Wyeth), a renowned illustrator. Guided by his father from a young age, he pursued a career as a painter, and quickly made a name for himself, with all his works selling out at his solo exhibition in 1937. He distanced himself from avant-garde art movements of his time, and throughout his life meticulously depicted the familiar world around him, based in his hometown of Pennsylvania and Maine, where he spent his summers. Wyeth's works portrayed the American landscape, its history, and the people living there, earning him high acclaim within the United States. In 2007, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Bush. He also enjoys great popularity in Japan, with exhibitions frequently held since his first retrospective in 1974. Although he passed away due to old age on January 16, 2009, he remains highly popular as an iconic American painter.
