- Profile -

Masumi Shiohara / Photographer

I'm a fruit farmer. I have endeavored to create an artistic record of the fruits I grow in the form of photographs in their "most visually beautiful form before they are harvested."

My artwork is similar to "botanical art" and I aim to depict both precision and level of detail, combined with aesthetic beauty.
Multiple fruits ripen in the orchard. However, not all fruits are objects of beauty in terms of their shape and leaf distribution.
Due to daily plant care throughout the year and weather conditions that change from year to year, the final plant yield varies from year to year.
There are many varieties that disappear without ever seeing the light of day due to breed improvement.
In other words, it is a portrait of the fruit and a photograph of the deceased.

Masumi Shiohara was born in Nagano Prefecture in 1974 . Worked as a development engineer at a microfabrication company. After leaving the company, he took over the management of the family orchard from his parents, and currently runs the farm. While growing fruit here, he developed an interest in incorporating fruit into photographic artwork, a skill he taught himself.

The inspiration to capture these in photographs came when a botanical artist asked me to provide him with fruit on a branch.
Since then, he has continued to create photographic artwork of fruit on branches.
