Title: Crushed/sunglasses
Artist: Misato Kurimoto
Work description: This work is one piece in the installation "Crushed/copy" released in 2017.
The artist photographs existing products and attempts to create patterns based on the "copy" data. However, every piece has one "crushed" part, and this part is repaired with the traditional Japanese technique of gold lacquering. This broken part prevents the pattern from being formed, but at the same time, it gives each piece a unique look.
Even scratches and imperfections that may be seen as negative at first glance can be given color with kintsugi, breaking away from the reproduction of an existing product and creating new value in the monotonous repetition.
This work explores the true essence of decoration and beauty, and asks the viewer about the value and true essence of things in modern society.
